WAIJIAO
WAIJIAO (外教) is a comic about being a foreign English teacher in China. My girlfriend and I have lived in China since 2007. The format is loosely episodic, expository, anecdotal. It is not precisely nonfiction in that I have combined aspects of different years, cities, schools and students into one story, but everything comes from our experiences and observations. My hope is that WAIJIAO can explain, or at least demonstrate, something about Chinese society beyond the classroom.
THE FOREMAN
My first venture into the comic medium. It is drawn in pencil, which I thought was a good way to capture the feel of a modern Chinese city. The character of The Foreman is based on a ‘documentary’ film we saw at the Three Gorges Dam, during which a similar visage appeared to narrate images of bulldozers filling in the Yangtze River. The Foreman first appeared on This Ridiculous World.
